Atrial Septal Defect ClosureAn atrial septal defect or ASD is an abnormal opening between the upper two chambers of the heart, known as the right atrium and the left atrium. It is a congenital heart defect that permits mixing of deoxygenated (blue) blood returning to the heart from the body (right atrium) and freshly oxygenated (red) blood coming from the lungs (left atrium).

Atrial Septal Defect Closure is the procedure by which an atrial septal defect is closed. This can be performed minimally invasively in the catheterization lab using a “closure device” or surgically in the operating room by simply sewing it closed or placing a patch over it. In the case of open surgery, it requires the use of "the heart-lung machine." This permits the surgeon to safely open the right atrium and access the atrial septal defect in a relatively bloodless field. Repairs range from relatively simple operations to more complex procedures depending on the location, size, and characteristics of the ASD. The average duration of the operation ranges from 2 to 3 hours.
