Breast Augmentation refers to the surgical procedure of enlarging of the breasts via implants.
Breast augmentation or augmentation mammoplasty is the procedure to enhance or augment the size and shape of a woman's breasts.
A breast implant is used for most breast augmentation procedures. This implant may be filled with silicone gel or a salt-water solution known as saline. Typically, a small incision is made in the crease where the breast meets the chest. The implant is placed through this small incision and centered beneath the nipple. Stitches are used to close the incision.
Breast augmentation surgery usually requires one to two hours to complete. Following the insertion and placement of the breast implants, sutures are used to close the surgical incisions. Many cosmetic surgeons will wrap the chest region with a gauze bandage to provide support and to assist with healing. Occasionally, tubes may be used for a brief time following the breastaugmentation surgery to drain the surgical site.
Breast augmentation surgery stretches the breast tissue and, therefore, can be painful especially in those breastaugmentation cases where the implants have been placed under the chest muscle.
WHAT
IS BREAST AUGMENTATION?
Breast
Augmentation or Augmentation
Mammoplasty is a surgical procedure by which the
size and shape of the breasts can be enhanced.
This surgery improves the contours of the
breasts, restores their shape after pregnancy or
excessive weight loss, firms up sagging breasts,
and enhances the appearance of the breast that
is deformed due to congenital abnormalities.
WHO
CAN GO FOR BREAST AUGMENTATION?
If
you think your breast size is very small or your
breasts are uneven, or if your breasts have lost
shape due to pregnancy or substantial
weight-loss, you are an ideal candidate for Breast Augmentation surgery.
HOW
TO PREPARE FOR THE SURGERY?
Your
surgeon will instruct you to avoid several drugs
including aspirin and anti-inflammatory
medicines that might interfere with clotting,
for at least 7 days before the surgery. Also, if
you are on Vitamin E medication, you must stop
taking it 3-4 days before the
surgery.
WHAT
HAPPENS DURING THE SURGERY?
During the Breast
Augmentation surgery, your Plastic
Surgeon makes an incision around the breast area
and lifts the tissues, creating a space. This is
where the implants are positioned. The
implants are usually made of soft material such
as saline or silicone gel. In most cases, the
surgeon uses silicone gel filled implants. Breast Augmentation surgery is
usually performed under general
anaesthesia.
WHAT
HAPPENS AFTER THE SURGERY ?
Your
stitches will be removed within 7-10 days from
the surgery. Thereafter, you can start your
normal routine and can even begin your regular
exercise schedule within four weeks. The scars
and red marks will be visible for a month and
will start fading in 6 to 8 weeks. Your Plastic
Surgeon will advice regular breast massage to
maintain softness of implants and to prevent
capsular contracture or hardening of
implants.
WHAT
PRECAUTIONS SHOULD YOU TAKE AFTER THE
SURGERY?
After the surgery, you must not drive
and avoid excessive physical activities for
about a week. You must visit your surgeon at
prescribed intervals for follow-up care. These
visits will help your surgeon to evaluate your
progress and recommend action, if
required.
WHAT
ARE THE RISKS AND SIDE EFFECTS OF THE
SURGERY?
Breast Augmentation or Augmentation Mammoplasty is generally a safe
procedure but some patients may experience
excessive bleeding, infection or side effects of
anaesthesia. You might feel sensitive around the
nipples following the surgery, which will settle
over time. Occasionally some patients can have
loss of feeling in the breasts or nipples that
may be permanent. This surgical procedure leaves
minimal scars. If you are a smoker, the risks of
poor healing and wider scarring are much higher.
In approximately 10% of patients these may be
‘capsular contracture’ or hardening of implants.
This condition can be corrected by massaging
your breast during healing, And Following the
instructions of your
surgeon.
