WHAT IS BREAST LIFT OR MASTOPEXY?
Breast lift or Mastopexy is a surgical procedure that reshapes the sagging breasts, making them firm and lifted. It can also reduce the size of areola - the darker skin around the nipples. This surgery improves the elasticity of the breasts that is lost due to pregnancy and nursing. It can be combined with Breast Augmentation to enhance the size of the breasts.

WHO CAN GO FOR BREAST LIFT?
Breast lift or Mastopexy is suitable for you if you want to get rid of sagging breasts, giving them a firmer appearance, or if you want to have fuller breasts with breast implants.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR THE SURGERY?
Your surgeon will instruct you to avoid several drugs including aspirin and anti-inflammatory medicines that might interfere with clotting, for at least 7 days before the surgery. Also, if you are on Vitamin E medication, you must stop taking it 3-4 days before the surgery.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE SURGERY?
In the Breast lift surgery, your surgeon removes extra skin s u r ro u n d i n g the areola, and lower section of your breast. The surgeon then s h i f t s t h e skin to tighten the breast. Consequently, your breast will look firm, uplifted and shapely. During this surgery many patients may opt for an augmentation of the breast size along with the lift. In such instances, your surgeon will simultaneously insert breast implants. This will make your skin smooth and give your breasts a firmer, fuller appearance.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE SURGERY?
Your doctor may advice you for regular breast massage after the first week to hasten the healing process . This also helps avoid 'capsular contracture ' or contracting of the skin surrounding the breast implant, which can make your breast feel hard and tight. Your stitches will be removed within 7-10 days from the surgery. Thereafter, you can start your normal routine and can even begin your regular exercise schedule within four weeks. The scars and red marks will be visible for a month and will start fading in 6 to 8 weeks.

WHAT PRECAUTIONS SHOULD YOU TAKE AFTER THE SURGERY?
After the surgery, you must not drive and avoid excessive physical activities for about a week. You must visit your surgeon at prescribed intervals for follow-up care. These visits will help your surgeon to evaluate your progress and recommend action, if required.

WHAT ARE THE RISKS AND SIDE EFFECTS OF THE SURGERY?
Breast lift or Mastopexy is generally a safe procedure but some patients may experience excessive bleeding, infection or side effects of anaesthesia. You might feel sensitive or numbness around the nipples following the surgery, these usually resolve in 6-12 weeks. This surgical procedure leaves a few scars, but if you are a smoker, the risks of poor healing and wider scarring are much higher. In some cases, the size of the breasts can be unequal or the nipples may not be in the right place, post surgery. This condition can be corrected by an additional procedure. Since some of the milk ducts or glands are removed during the surgery, breastfeeding may not be possible in 5-10% of the patients following this surgery.
