|
| WHAT
IS BREAST REDUCTION? |
| Breast Reduction or
Reduction Mammoplasty is a surgical procedure
that reduces the size of the breasts and makes
them firm by removing excessive fat, glandular
tissue, and skin from the
breast. |
|
| WHO
CAN GO FOR BREAST REDUCTION? |
| If
you experience any form of discomfort or upper
back, shoulder and neck pain due to excessive
breast size and weight, or if you just want to
feel better about yourself and enhance your
appearance, you are a candidate for Breast
Reduction. |
|
| HOW
TO PREPARE FOR THE SURGERY? |
| Your
surgeon will instruct you to avoid several drugs
including aspirin and anti-inflammatory
medicines that might interfere with clotting,
for at least 7 days before the surgery. Also, if
you are on Vitamin E medication, you must stop
taking it 3-4 days before the
surgery. |
|
| WHAT
HAPPENS DURING THE SURGERY? |
| During Breast
Reduction surgery your surgeon removes
excess breast tissue, fat and skin. Depending
upon the shape and size of your breast, your
surgeon makes incisions and lifts the nipples
and areola. Your surgeon then brings down the
skin located above the nipples, pulls it
together and sews it to enhance the shape and
curves. Though your doctor diligently tries to
conceal the scars, some permanent scars do
remain, which take time to
fade. |
|
| WHAT
HAPPENS AFTER THE SURGERY? |
| Stitches will be removed within 7-10
days from the surgery. Thereafter, you can start
your normal routine and can even begin your
regular exercise schedule within 3 to 4 weeks.
The scars and red marks will be visible for a
month and willstart fading in 6 to 8
weeks. |
|
| WHAT
PRECAUTIONS SHOULD YOU TAKE AFTER THE
SURGERY? |
| After the surgery, you must not drive
and avoid excessive physical activities for
about a week. You must visit your surgeon at
prescribed intervals for follow-up care. These
visits will help your surgeon to evaluate your
progress and recommend action, if
required. |
|
| WHAT
ARE THE RISKS AND SIDE EFFECTS OF THE
SURGERY? |
| Breast Reduction or Reduction
Mammoplasty is generally a safe procedure but
some patients may experience excessive bleeding,
infection or side effects of anaesthesia. You
might feel increased or decreased sensitivity
around the nipples following the surgery, which
is temporary in most instances. This surgical
procedure leaves a few scars, but in smokers,
the risks of poor healing and wider scarring are
much higher. In some instances, there may be
minor asymmetry in the breast sizes or nipple
position after surgery. This can be corrected by
a minor revision procedure. Since some of the
milk ducts and glands may be removed during the
surgery, breast-feeding may not be possible in
5- 10% of women after
surgery. |
