Broken Ankle Treatment

BROKEN ANKLE : In case of a broken ankle, any one of the three bones that make up the ankle joint could break as the result of a fall, an automobile accident or some other trauma to the ankle. A broken ankle may also involve damage to the ligaments. The seriousness of a broken ankle can vary. Breaks in the ankle can range from less-serious fractures, involving tiny cracks in the bones, to severe, shattering breaks that pierces the skin.

Because a severe sprain can often mask the symptoms of a broken ankle, every injury to the ankle should be examined by a physician. Symptoms of a broken ankle usually include an immediate and severe pain, swelling, bruising, inability to put any weight on the injured foot, deformity, particularly if there is a dislocation as well as a fracture .

Treatment for a broken ankle depends on the exact site and severity of the fracture. A severely broken ankle may require surgery to implant wires, plates, rods or screws into the broken bone to maintain proper alignment during healing.
