The larynx is often called the “voice box” or the “Adam’s Apple.” The larynx and vocal cords sit above the trachea (wind pipe) and are the entrance to the lungs. The larynx makes sound for speaking and protects the airway during swallowing. The vocal cords change the sound and pitch of the voice. They close tightly when a person swallows and open to allow breathing. The hypopharynx surrounds the larynx. It is a part of the oesophagus or food pipe. Food enters the oesophagus, as it passes through the neck and chest into the stomach. Several types of cancer may occur in these two areas. Almost all of these cancers start from the thin, flat cells (squamous cells) that line the larynx and hypopharynx. Squamous cell cancer does not form suddenly. It starts when the cells begin to change. Smoking and heavy alcohol consumption usually cause the changes. The cells become pre-cancerous. Most pre-cancerous cells will not become cancers. If the causes (like smoking) stop, these pre-cancerous cells usually go away.

Your body is made up of many types of cells. In normal course, cells grow, divide, and produce more cells to keep your body healthy. However, at times, this process goes wrong and cells become abnormal, forming more cells in an uncontrolled way. These extra cells form a mass of tissue, called a growth or a ‘tumour’. Tumours can be benign, which means not cancerous, or malignant, which means cancerous. Colorectal cancer occurs when a malignant tumour forms in the tissue of your colon or rectum.

Leukaemia is a cancer of ‘blood cells.’ It is commonly known as blood cancer. In this cancer the bone marrow starts producing abnormal blood cells, which grow at a very fast rate and outnumber the other blood cells like normal white blood cells, red blood cells (cells that carry oxygen to all parts of the body) and platelets (cells that help form blood clots that control bleeding). These abnormal blood cells are knows as leukaemia cells.

The most common types of breast cancer originate in either the breast’s milk ducts (ductal carcinoma) or lobules (lobular carcinoma). The point of origin is determined by the microscopic appearance of the cancer cells from a biopsy.

Medical Oncology is the science of treating and curing cancer with anticancer drugs. Anticancer drugs are of various types like chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, immunotherapy, targeted monoclonal antibodies etc. These act on the cancer cells to either kill them directly or indirectly. A combined treatment using anticancer drugs along with surgery and/or radiotherapy achieves a greater therapeutic effect. Led by Dr. A K Vaid, who is a renowned Senior Medical Oncologist in the country, Artemis Cancer Institute has become one of the leading centers in North India for detection, diagnosis, treatment and multidisciplinary management of cancer.

Traditionally, imaging technology used IMRT (Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy) to produce three – dimensional scans of the patient’s anatomy, to identify the exact location of the cancer tumour prior to treatment. Though IMRT enhanced the capacity of focusing radiation to cancer bearing areas, yet this technology had a drawback. Tumours can move, both during a radiation treatment session and from one treatment session to another as a result of normal internal organ action (digestion, elimination and breathing). This unplanned position of tumour leads it to not receiving full amount of radiation as it should receive, and normal tissues may receive more radiation than they can tolerate. To overcome this challenge, Image Guided Radiotherapy (IGRT) was introduced as a novel technology. IGRT combines a new form of scanning technology, which allows planar of X-ray Volume Imaging with IMRT. This enables physicians to adjust the radiation beam based on the position of the target tumour and critical organs, while the patient is in the treatment beams.

Internal beam radiation therapy allows exposure of only those cells which are affected with cancer by inserting a small amount of radioactive substance into the human body. In the case of mammary gland cancer, plastic tubes penetrated with radioactive wires are inserted into the gland. For cervix uteri cancer and uterus cancer, radiation source is inserted into cervix uteri. Brachytherapy is a type of radiation therapy used to treat cancer. Radiation therapy is the use of a type of energy, called ionizing radiation, to kill cancer cells and shrink tumours. Unlike external beam therapy (EBT), in which high – energy X-ray beams generated by a machine are directed at the tumour from a distance outside the body, brachytherapy involves placing a radioactive material directly inside the body.
