Carpal Tunnel Decompression

CARPAL TUNNEL DECOMPRESSION : The median nerve supplies sensation from the palm side of the thumb, index and middle fingers, and half of the ring finger. It also controls a muscle at the base of the thumb. The median nerve runs through a tunnel, called the carpal tunnel, in the palm of your hand; hence the name carpal tunnel decompression.

The carpal tunnel syndrome causes pain, tingling, and numbness in the hand from pressure on the median nerve in your wrist. Illnesses, pregnancy, and obesity can cause carpal tunnel syndrome. It causes pain and tingling in the fingers and hand, and even higher up the forearm.

The aim of a carpal tunnel decompression operation is to relieve the pressure on the median nerve. This is done by opening the 'roof' of your carpal tunnel to give your nerve more space. In a carpal tunnel decompression procedure, a cut is made in the palm, next to the skin crease that runs up the centre. The roof of the tunnel is then cut to give the median nerve more space. The wound is then closed up with stitches or clips.
