Colon Polyp Removal
COLON POLYP REMOVAL: A colonic polyp is a polyp found in the colon. A polyp can be defined as lining of mucosa which projects out in a mushroom shape. They are commonly found in the colon and are mostly benign but have the potential to become malignant.
A colon polyp can be checked and diagnosed in the four ways. It can be checked through a digital rectal exam. In this procedure, the rectum is checked to see if it feels normal. This test can find polyps only in the rectum.
A barium enema procedure can also be used to check for colon polyps. A liquid called barium is put into the rectum before taking x rays of the large intestine. Barium makes the intestine look white in the pictures. Since polyps are dark, they become visible.
In a sigmoidoscopy, the doctor can see inside your large intestine. The doctor puts a thin flexible tube into the rectum. The device is called a sigmoidoscope, and it has a light and a tiny video camera in it. The sigmoidoscope is used to look at the last third of the large intestine.
A colonoscopy is like sigmoidoscopy, but in this all of the large intestine can be seen. It usually requires sedation.
In a colon polyp removal procedure, the colon polyp is removed using any of the various techniques. Sometimes, the doctor takes it out during sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy. Or the doctor may decide to operate through the abdomen. The polyp is then tested for cancer.
