Cranioplasty

CRANIOPLASTY : Cranioplasty is the surgical repair of a defect or deformity of a skull. Surgical cranioplasty is as an operative procedure designed to improve the symmetry and/or shape the head. It involves the resection, remoulding and movement of the bones of the head.

Cranioplasty is performed under a general anaesthetic. The repair can be carried out by using bone removed at earlier surgery that has been preserved or by using bone from elsewhere as a graft. The iliac bone bounding the pelvis, ribs and even a part of adjacent skull bone can be used.

In cranioplasty, a gap in the skull is also repaired using synthetic material. Materials such as tantalum, silastic and other similar material manufactured for the express purpose of implantation into the body can also be used. After cranioplasty, it is usually necessary for the patient to be in the hospital for a week or so.
