| WHAT
IS A FACELIFT? |
| Facelift is a
surgical procedure that removes extra facial
skin, wrinkles, furrows around the nose and jaw,
tones up the facial muscles and the skin around
the neck, leaving the face refreshed and
youthful. The Facelift procedure can be done separately or in
combination with other surgical procedures like
forehead lift, eyelid surgery, nose reshaping,
or laser
resurfacing. |
|
| WHO
CAN GO FOR A FACELIFT? |
| If
your facial skin and the skin around the neck
have sagged with age or due to exposure to the
sun, or if you want a youthful appeal for your
face, then you are an ideal candidate for a Facelift. This surgery can be
performed on you, irrespective of your age if
you are a healthy
individual. |
|
| HOW
TO PREPARE FOR THE PROCEDURE? |
| Before the Facelift procedure, your surgeon will examine your facial
skin and the bone structure and will discuss
your expectations from the surgery. You must
inform the surgeon about your medical history
especially related to high blood pressure, blood
clotting, or affinity towards scarring. In case
you are on any medication, particularly aspirin
or drugs that affect blood clotting or even if
you are a smoker, you must bring this to the
notice of your surgeon. If you are a smoker, you
must discontinue smoking for a week or two
before and after the Facelift procedure, as smoking may restrict the blood
flow to the skin and can result in slow healing
or skin
loss. |
|
| WHAT
HAPPENS DURING THE PROCEDURE? |
| The
surgery will be tailored to your face, age and
particular needs and aesthetic goals. There are
minimally options like thread lift or endoscopic Facelift that can be an option
for some of the persons with lesser degrees of
aging or skin sagging who do not require the
traditional open surgery. During the Facelift procedure, the surgeon
makes incisions above the hairline on either
side of the forehead, which extends towards the
front portion of the ear or just inside the ear
and continues till the back of your ear and
lower scalp. In case the skin around your neck
and chin is redundant, a small incision may be
made below the chin. The surgeon decides the
position of the incisions depending upon the
bone structure of your face and separates the
skin from facial muscles and the fat.
Thereafter, excess fat around the neck and chin
is removed to enhance the facial contour and the
muscles are also tightened and the incisions are
closed with
stitches. |
|
| WHAT
HAPPENS AFTER THE PROCEDURE? |
| After the Facelift, a
slender tube/drain may be positioned below the
skin, at the back of your ear, to prevent blood
from collecting under the skin. This is removed
on the following day after surgery. The operated
area will be bandaged to reduce the puffiness
and bruising. You will be advised to keep your
head elevated for a few days post surgery to
decrease swelling. It is important to follow
surgeon's instructions and take the prescribed
medicines regularly to avoid any problems after
the surgery. The stitches will be removed within
a few days after surgery. There may be numbness
or lack of sensation on the operated area
temporarily. This feeling will slowly fade away
in a few weeks or
months. |
|
| WHAT
PRECAUTIONS SHOULD YOU TAKE AFTER THE
PROCEDURE? |
| After the surgery, you must avoid any
kind of vigorous activity like lifting,
straining, bending for 5-7 days. You can resume
your daily routine and exercise programme after
three weeks from the surgery or after
consultation with your Plastic
Surgeon. |
|
| WHAT
ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS/RISKS OF THE
PROCEDURE? |
| Facelift is generally
a safe procedure, but in rare cases some side
effects may occur. These include hematoma
wherein blood might accumulate under the skin;
injury to the nerves connecting the facial
muscles, or infection and reactions to
anaesthesia. In case of smokers, slow healing
may be
observed. |
