LASIK surgery or Laser Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis has over the last 2 decades become a synonym for independence from spectacles for millions of patients. First introduced in 1987 by VISX Inc. in USA, it has replaced other forms of refractive surgery procedures due to its much better safety, predictability and visual results.
LASIK machines use the Excimer (EXCited dIMER) laser and corrects refractive error by reshaping the cornea thus changing its refractive power. Laser Vision Correction is most suitable for myopia and astigmatism and can also be used to treat low degrees of hypermetropia.
Wavefront or customized LASIK is a new innovation in LASIK surgery which allows the procedure to be customized to each particular patient. While routine LASIK corrects the refractive error in the form of spherical and cylindrical power, Wavefront LASIK also attempts to correct finer irregularities in the eye which may also contribute to poor vision but may not be amenable to correction by spectacles only.
