| WHAT
IS RHINOPLASTY? |
| Gallbladder is a small pear-shaped
organ that is about three to six inches in
length. It is found below the liver. Its
function is to store and concentrate bile,, a
greenish brown fluid which is produced in the
liver. |
|
| WHO
CAN GO FOR RHINOPLASTY? |
| If
your nose is deformed due to birth defect,
injury or agerelated changes, or if you are
unhappy with the shape or appearance of your
nose, you are an ideal candidate for Rhinoplasty.
This surgery can correct breathing problems and
improve the aesthetics of your nose.Skin type,
ethnic background, and age are important factors
to be considered before going in for this type
of surgery. You must be at least fifteen years
of age to undergo this procedure. Exceptions can
be made in cases where breathing is severely
impaired. |
|
| HOW
TO PREPARE FOR THE SURGERY? |
| You
must strictly follow the instructions of your
surgeon before surgery. These would include
guidelines on eating, drinking and smoking,
taking or avoiding vitamins, iron tablets and
certain medications. If you develop a cold or an
infection of any kind, especially a skin
infection, your surgery may be postponed. Also,
while making preparations, be sure to arrange
for someone to drive you home after the
procedure and, if needed, to help you at home
for a day or
two. |
|
| WHAT
HAPPENS DURING THE SURGERY? |
| Depending upon the complexity of the
surgery, it can be performed under local or
general anaesthesia. Your surgeon will make
incisions to reach the bone and cartilage in the
nose. To avoid scarring, majority of the
incisions are made inside the nose. In some
cases, an incision is made in the area of skin
separating the nostrils.Subsequently, your
surgeon will add, remove or rearrange certain
amounts of underlying bone and cartilage to
create a new shape. The tissues will then be
re-draped over the new frame and the incisions
will be
closed. |
|
| WHAT
HAPPENS AFTER THE SURGERY? |
| Immediately after the surgery, a
splint will be applied to the outside of your
nose to help retain the shape and to keep the
structure stable for at least five to eight
days. Soft, absorbent packs may be used inside
the nose. The packs will be removed the morning
following surgery. Your eyes will be puffy and
develop black circles especially in the first
few days after surgery. You will need medication
to relieve pain. Your surgeon will advise you to
avoid blowing your nose for at least seven days
post the operation. Your doctor may recommend
cold compresses for the bruising and swelling
around the eyes to reduce the discomfort. In
this surgery, absorbable sutures are usually
used as these do not have to be removed. Nasal
dressing and splints are usually removed six or
seven days after
surgery. |
|
| WHAT
PRECAUTIONS SHOULD YOU TAKE AFTER THE
SURGERY? |
| It
is crucial that you follow your surgeon's
directions post surgery, especially to keep your
head raised for a few days after surgery. Some
activities will be prohibited in the weeks after
the procedure as specified by your surgeon. Sun
exposure, exertion, and risk of injury must be
avoided. If you wear glasses, special
arrangements must be made to ensure that the
glasses do not rest on the bridge of the nose.
Tape and other devices are sometimes used to
permit wearing glasses without stressing the
area where surgery was
performed. |
|
| WHAT
ARE THE RISKS AND SIDE EFFECTS OF THE
SURGERY? |
| Rhinoplasty is
usually safe when performed by a well trained
plastic surgeon who operates in a properly
equipped operating facility. When Rhinoplasty is performed from
inside the nose, there are no visible scars
whatsoever. When “open” technique is used, or
when the procedure requires reducing the span of
nostrils, small scars may remain at the base of
the nose but these are usually not visible.
Occasionally, your surgeon may recommend a
second procedure, for example to correct a minor
deformity which may not have been rectified at
the time of surgery. Such cases can occur
occasionally when major changes in size and
shape of the nose are being done. The corrective
surgery is usually
minor. |
